This lab allows students to analyze data and trends within in the data to derive the equation for the period of pendulum motion. One day is devoted to obtaining the data. All the equipment that is needed is a stand per group, string (preferable nylon or any other string that isn't twisted together as this may cause the masses to rotate while swinging causing unnessasary error in data), at least 10 different weights and a stop watch. I would suggest students work in pairs. The second day of the lab is entirely conducted in excel. Students are to input their data into the file provided, fill in the missing column and create scatter plots displaying appropriate tend lines. They are to use their knowledge of functions to determine the relationship that exists between the given parameters and the period of pendulum motion. The final component of the excel portion asks students to analyze a system of pendulum and determine the amount of time necessary for all weights to be back together at the starting point.
